SD Pride Booth!

Hello everyone!

We are thrilled to announce that our first ever pride booth was a huge success! We had two main goals over pride weekend: 1) increase our membership, specifically reaching out to people outside of the various academic institutions in La Jolla, and 2) conduct a survey to gain data on LGBT demographics in science vs. non-science fields. Thanks to the hard work of our wonderful volunteers, we were able to sign up close to 100 new members! Some of our new members are a part of national biotech companies or have self-owned businesses and are interested in recruiting for positions. We are currently working on developing a platform that would allow recruiters to meet prospective hires.

To date, funding institutions do not recognize LGBT as an underrepresented group in STEM fields. We are hoping that our small survey will provide compelling evidence to encourage a national poll to determine how well represented LGBT professionals are in STEM fields. Based on the results of such a study, new avenues of funding could be created to encourage young LGBT scientists to pursue their careers. Over pride weekend our volunteers were able to collect roughly 250 surveys! We are currently processing the data and will post our findings on the website.

The QuEST executive committee is currently working on collecting donations from various sources to put on another networking event and to begin outreach programs. If you are interested in getting involved or would like to offer any input, please feel free to contact us!

We would like to send a special thanks to Stanford Pride and to NOGLSTP for co-sponsoring our booth at the San Diego Pride Festival. Thanks also to the Society of Fellows at TSRI and to the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering Graduate Student Council for additional funding.
