Hello world,

Our kickoff event was a huge success with over 50 attendees, great weather and an unbeatable sunset. We had a great mix of students, postdocs, professors and people for industry that made for a fun and stimulating with people from all types of professions.

We had bioengineers, chemists, pharmacists, doctors, computer scientists - you name it. LGBT people in the San Diego area sure are a diverse bunch, with attendees from many institutions, companies, backgrounds and even other countries.

I am also happy to report that we had a good mix of men and woman. Hopefully someone will send me a good photo of all the ladies in the crowd :-D

Special thanks to Rochelle "Shellley" Diamond and Amy Ross for making the trip down from LA to inspire our guests. Shelley is current Chair of the national organization NOGLSTP. Amy Ross is their mentoring project coordinator.

And special thanks to Eden for catering the delicious sushi and wine. Thanks to the Scripps Society of Fellows and the UCSD Graduate Student Association for funding the whole event. Finally, thank you to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography for letting us use their beautiful beachside lounge.

Cheers,
Greg (Board member/webmaster)
